ERTRAC newsletter | The European Technology Platform for Road Transport

ERTRAC is the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council. It is the European technology platform which brings together road transport stakeholders to develop a common vision for road transport research in Europe.

ERTRAC Automated Driving roadmap widely disseminated

Automation of road transport has been a very discussed topic in 2015. ERTRAC, via a specific task force, has been able to deliver a joint European roadmap on Automated Driving: setting common definitions, objectives, challenges, and roadmaps for the different applications areas, including recommendations for actions at European level. Since a common view of the deployment challenges by private and public actors is very important, the ERTRAC roadmap has been distributed widely within the industry, the research community, and the public authorities.

ERTRAC has been involved in several events during this autumn, including the IAA Autoshow in Frankfurt early September, where the roadmap was presented to European Commission and German ministries officials, combined with visits of automotive companies booths, to show that the first systems of automated driving are already being deployed on the market. Another important event was the ITS World Congress in Bordeaux in October, where the automation of road vehicles was very much a focus point: ERTRAC had a booth in the exhibition to present its roadmap, which was also distributed at the booth of the European Commission. Finally, early November, an Information Day was organised by ERTRAC to present to the research community the call for projects launched by the European Union on Automated Road Transport for the years 2016-2017, which includes the funding of R&D and of field operational tests.

Presentations done by the European Commission at this information day are available on the ERTRAC website: http://www.ertrac.org/infoday-automation

Update of Powertrains roadmaps

Two major roadmaps on powertrains have been produced by ERTRAC a few years ago: on Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and on Electrification. The ICE roadmap, which will cover both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, is currently being revised, with the ambition to show how innovation in ICE can bring important energy efficiency improvements and deliver CO2 and pollutant emissions reductions. The ERTRAC members will be involved in the drafting of this important document, which will be presented next year at the TRA Conference.

The other powertrain roadmap addressing electrification and hybridisation of vehicles will be also updated during 2016. The ERTRAC members will be called to be involved in that work, which should also include a public consultation work.

Preparation of the TRA 2016 Conference in Warsaw

TRA is the main Transport Research conference in Europe sponsored by the European Commission and the European Technology Platforms, including ERTRAC. In 2016, the TRA Conference will be hosted by Poland in Warsaw, from 18 to 21 April. All key topics of transport research will be addressed during the conference sessions, which are also a very good opportunity to showcase results from European funded projects. All ERTRAC members are invited to participate to the conference. Further information and registration on http://www.traconference.eu
