STREnGth_M releases report on barriers to research deployment

At the RTR2024 conference, a new report developed in STREnGth_M presented the critical barriers to deploying research results in mobility and transport solutions, emphasizing the importance of translating academic insights into practical applications. The report, derived from a comprehensive analysis of EU-funded projects, underscores the challenges of implementing research outcomes to drive innovation, enhance infrastructure, and inform policies.

Deploying research results is pivotal for creating practical solutions, from new products to policy recommendations. However, the mobility and transport sector face numerous obstacles, including regulatory hurdles, technological limitations, funding constraints, resistance to change, and issues with interoperability, data privacy, and societal acceptance. These barriers often hinder the progression from research to real-world implementation.

The methodology behind this report deliverable involved analyzing insights from project moderators and managers at the RTR2024 conference. Responses to targeted questions about barriers were aggregated and refined during an online workshop.

Key Recommendations to Overcome Barriers

The report outlines actionable strategies for addressing these challenges, including:

  • Enhancing R&I Technology: Sustained investment in research and innovation to support the digital and green transition in road transport.
  • Improving Knowledge Transfer: Expanding the use of pilots, demonstrations, and training to bridge the gap between research and implementation.
  • Increasing User Involvement: Building stronger connections with end-users to align solutions with their needs.
  • Broadening Stakeholder Engagement: Encouraging new participants in research to foster a more integrated community.
  • Standardization and Regulatory Support: Engaging stakeholders to develop harmonized solutions and maintain active dialogue with regulatory bodies.
  • Infrastructure Collaboration: Strengthening ties with physical, energy, and digital infrastructure stakeholders to address specific challenges like electric grid capacity and renewable fuel systems.
  • Enhanced Funding Mechanisms: Securing financial support to overcome resource limitations and accelerate the adoption of new technologies.
Driving the Future of Sustainable Mobility

The recommendations set a clear path for overcoming barriers and accelerating the deployment of innovative solutions in road transport. By fostering collaboration across sectors and addressing critical obstacles, the European road transport community aims to achieve a sustainable, efficient, and user-focused future.

RTR2024 once again served as a vital platform for innovation, showcasing how EU-funded projects are shaping the future of mobility and highlighting the collaborative efforts needed to bring research from the lab to the road.
